A well-loved original Hans Christian Anderson story will
come alive on stage at the Hilton College Theatre when the KZN Midlands Youth
Ballet in partnership with Cape Town City Ballet presents its inaugural
production of Thumbelina - the
full-length ballet. The production will be directed by Robin van Wyk, artistic
director of the Cape Town City Ballet, playing for four performances at the
Hilton College Theatre on July 8 and 9, 2015.
Some 71 Ballet students from Pietermaritzburg studios are
learning the ballet, to dance as the supporting cast alongside nine principal
dancers from the Cape Town City Ballet in the leading roles.
A fairytale that includes jitterbugs, ice fairies, snow
crystals, blue birds, mice and chickens, creates space for many children's
stage dreams to come true, as they participate in the magic. Boys and girls of
all ages coached by Colleen Boote, Susan Cleary, Joyann Goddard, Brenda Hunter,
Lisa Jennings, Domaine Keyser, Brenda McLachlan, Julia Powell, Heather Proctor
and Cornelia Puller make up the cast.
Robin van Wyk trained in Pietermaritzburg under Brenda McLachlan before a successful dancing career in NAPAC and PACT, in which he
danced many principal roles. He has been Artistic Director for Cape Town City
Ballet since 2008.
Thumbelina runs at
Hilton College Theatre on July 8 and 9 with performances at 14h30 and 18h00 on both
days. Tickets R100 (R80 pensioners and children under 12) booked online at www.hiltontheatre.co.za
