WITS ART MUSEUM CALL TO ARTISTS

Deadline: July 31, 2015

Activate/Captivate will open in October 2015 at Wits Art Museum. The exhibition will focus on the many ways in which the WAM holdings have inspired or informed the work of artists, researchers, students and lecturers.

A component of the exhibition will be a ‘live artwork’, a painted mural that will result from the selected artist responding to artworks from the historical WAM African art collection. The artist will have access to the works beforehand for preparation and planning, but the painting of the mural will begin at the opening event.

It is anticipated that the mural will be in progress for between a week and no later than first month of the exhibition. Part of the concept of the project is the opportunity for the public to see the mural in progress. The selected works from the collection will be exhibited alongside the mural. The mural will be removed at the end of the show in January, 2016.

A primary goal for the project is to explore ways in which the WAM African art collection can inspire contemporary artistic process and to encourage a public dialogue between the work belonging to the collection and the work of the artist themselves.

Those wishing to apply should submit a proposal (no longer than 1 page) and an artist’s CV(no longer than 2 pages) by 12h00 on July 31, 2015, to info.wam@wits.ac.za

In addition to the proposal include a breakdown of the material cost and product list that will be required. Also include a link to your website (if you have one) and some examples of previous murals/paintings you have done.

Selected artist will receive R8,000 towards the mural, including artist fee and materials.

Artworks remain the copyright of the artists and will not necessarily be included into the WAM collection. Artists should avail themselves for media interviews and photos after completion of the artworks. Artists will be selected based on design submission and examples of previous mural/canvas work. Depending on the medium proposed, artists will either paint directly onto a wall or a stretched canvas over the wall. Dimensions can be provided on request.
