Ebonygypsy Arts has partnered with The Bat Centre, Stable
Theatre and the Ethekwini Municipality to present A Woman, A Hat, A Bag, And Her Belly, offering a variety of family-friendly
entertainment and recreational activities at Stable Theatre to encourage female
appreciation and the peculiars of creative wonders.
A Woman, A Hat, A Bag,
And Her Belly runs from August 6 to 9 this Women’s Month, with an all-rounder
programme of fun, laughter, and reflection.
Ebonygypsy Arts exists to merge multiple disciplines to
encourage a greater interest among the local audiences for the creative
industry within the Durban vicinity.
Ebonygypsy Simthandile Mtolo explains: “We’ve been able to
sketch out and capture quite finely the beauty, essence and relevance of women
through the use of the hat which in this production symbolizes her crown of
mind and responsibility, the bag which symbolizes her load, the concentration
on the beauty of her structure as she is with child, ultimately wrapping her
stomach with a fabric to give the allegory of the belly holding a gift. Our
gorgeous future mummies will perform a stirring movement piece and fashion show
inside the theatre with a range of other performances as accompaniment. The Stable
Restaurant will be used as a conspicuous exhibition showing our leading range
as exceptional charcoal on canvas pieces titled The Pink Series by Mlamuli Mkhwanazi, who will be exhibiting
alongside Nhlakanipho Mkhize (woodcut print), and Siyasanga Tundzi (jewellery)
of Hlubi Creations.
A craft market will be set out with stalls with items
ranging from fashion to furniture, decor and more.
Carnival games and competitions will be set out from August 7.
These include eating competitions, a game of musical chairs, and arm-wrestling
matches while the little ones can get their faces painted and bounce about in
the jumping castle.
An external stage has been put up for evening shows with
Friday being a Hiphop night, and Saturday evening boasting a jazz and poetry
programme. Poets Luleka Mhlanzi, Thando Fuze, Lungile Khwela, and Puseletso
Peterson will be joined by the Ebonygypsy herself, jazz songstress and host Simthandile
Mtolo.
