Durban University of Technology’s Drama and Production
Studies Department presents the Annual Season of Contemporary Dance entitled Xplosion.
This spirited production presents work that is exciting,
challenging, and that which explores new boundaries inspired by modern
contemporary dance, Hip-hop, music, Pantsula with a soundtrack edited by Music
lecturer Richardt Wissink. The principal purpose of the annual dance drama is
to create work of an excellent standard that is identifiable with, and
indigenous to, Durban, KwaZulu-Natal and South Africa.
This vibrant production explores the relationship between
movement and brain science and pushes the dancers to their limit by making
their bodies move far beyond their “norm”. It allows the dancers to dance with
drive and attack, punctuated with moments of beautiful lyricism accentuated by
body rolls and the organic flow of quirky movements throughout their bodies.
Xplosion tells the
story using rhythm of the music, costume, scenery, projection and simply
express ideas and emotions in significant forms through the elements of rhythm,
harmony and dynamics.
Xplosion involves
all 2nd and 3rd year Theatre Dance Specialists and
showcases 60 minutes new work by acclaimed Durban-based choreographers, Mdu
Mtshali, Marcia Mzindle and Vusi Makhanya with some choreography workshopped by
Dance Specialists. Lighting is designed by Mthandazo Mofokeng and the full
programme is coordinated and directed by Dance lecturer Mdu Mtshali.
Xplosion runs from August 25 to 27 in the Courtyard Theatre
in Mansfield Road. Tickets at the door.
