(Garth Anderson
receives the Judges Special Award from Caroline Smart at The Mercury Durban
Theatre Awards in November 2007)
The KwaZulu-Natal performing arts industry is saddened at
the death of Durban-based actor, director, producer and scriptwriter, Garth Anderson.
A long-time sufferer of diabetes, he was recently admitted
to hospital to have fluid drained from his lungs but died of a massive heart
attack yesterday (August 31). He leaves his father, Keith Anderson, brother
Russell and sisters Cindy and Pam and their families.
“Garth and I go back almost 45 years from the time I moved
to Durban to take up acting as a profession,” says artSMart Editor, Caroline
Smart. “We appeared in numerous shows together – both on stage and radio.
“In 2007, Garth received the Judges Special Award
for Lifetime Achievement for his considerable contribution to the performing arts
in Durban. Many young artistes who have made their name in theatre today owe
their skills to Garth’s training and guidance. There are some beautiful tributes
from all over the world on my Facebook page. Rest in peace, Garth, at last you are free from pain and immobility - may your spirit fly free.”
Further tributes and information
on a memorial get-together to follow.
