#SELFIE25

Opening at the KZNSA next week is the #Selfie25 exhibition, a modern legacy appreciation project that will see the unveiling of digital prints dedicated to 25 South African change-makers, disrupters and future icons.

This interactive digital art exhibition and social experiment by Cebo Simphiwe Xulu (aka MrMediaX) represents a project on three levels: digital exhibition website launch; community involvement and a travelling exhibition.

Some 25 unique digital portraits/selfies make up the #Selfie25 digital exhibition website – a virtual tour experience website that will house all 25 original artworks. The website will be launched during the #Selfie25 exhibition opening week and the exhibition will also run on Instagram and Facebook on the night. All artworks will be available to purchase in the digital currency Bitcoin as well as the local ZAR currency. The projected website launch is October 6, 2015.

The second level relates to three abstract artworks that have been exhibited at various exhibitions around Durban City during 2015 to build audience interest in the project. Attendees had the chance to engage with these artworks through taking a selfie with them. People who took selfies with the artworks get the exclusive opportunity to experience the #selfie25 website eight hours before the official website opening and launch on October 6. There is currently a running campaign to make these artworks #TheMostSelfiedArtworksEver (See a video of this initiative at https://vimeo.com/127797240)

Thirdly, this element promises the infiltration of various art spaces around South Africa, taking the whole project around the country to share the stories of the 25 South Africans to any city and environment who would love to host the project.

The KZNSA Gallery in Durban will host of the first full-scale exhibition in Durban, with Constitution Hill hosting the Johannesburg leg of the exhibition. The project aims to grow into an annual celebration of South Africa’s most iconic young people through various digital art executions.

#Selfie25 runs in the Mezzanine Gallery of the KZNSA from September 29 to October 11. The KZNSA is situated at 166 Bulwer Road, Glenwood, in Durban. More information on 031 277 1703, fax 031 201 8051 or cell 082 220 0368 or visit www.kznsagallery.co.za
