Former Durban
actor/writer John van de Ruit’s character of Spud burst onto the South African
literary scene as a schoolboy who deals with his insecurities and fears by
keeping a diary. Readers soon went Spud
crazy. The book sold more than 200,000 copies and yielded three sequels as well
as two movie adaptations, of which this is the first.
It’s not easy to be
14, lonely... and the only boy in a posh boarding school who has yet to reach
puberty. Winning the lead role in the school play, and the heart of a pretty
young lady, may be the keys to acceptance but, of course, both are easier said
than done.
