Acclaimed author Marguerite Poland, acknowledged as one of
South Africa’s most respected writers, was recently honoured with an Ingwazi
Award by The Land of Legends. This collective comprises some of KwaZulu-Natal’s
most prestigious hospitality and tourism-related establishments.
One of Poland’s works which focuses on KZN is The Abundant Herds: A Celebration of the
Nguni Cattle of the Zulu People with David Hammond-Took, illustrated by
Leigh Voigt.
Some 24 hours before receiving the Ingwazi Award, she heard that
she was the winner of the Nielsen Booksellers’ Choice Award.
Poland’s novels include Train to Doringbult; Shades;
Iron
Love; Recessional for Grace (translated
into French as Cantique pour Grace) and her recent work, The
Keeper. She has also written numerous books for children, a
biography of St Andrews College in Grahamstown and a charming book with Craig
Ivor titled Taken Captive by Birds.
