Durban’s Siwela Sonke Dance Theatre will present EDGE, a season of five bite-size dance
works by Siwela Sonke choreographers.
Funded by the National Lotteries Commission and the National
Arts Council, EDGE explores and
celebrates new identities, new design, and new thoughts. The season will
feature new works by Siwela Sonke choreographers who have created dance and
visual imagery that offer a multi-layered, crisp and vivid view of an emerging
South Africa.
The production represents one of the rare theatre seasons
for Siwela Sonke Dance Theatre who have become best known for performances
outside of conventional theatre spaces.
EDGE will offer
audiences five short new works of 15 minutes each, choreographed by Siwela
Sonke company members. The programme features choreographers Sbusiso Gantsa,
Siyabonga Mhlongo and Mxolisi Nkomonde showcasing works alongside Siwela
Sonke’s Neliswa Rushualang and Ntombi Gasa.
EDGE forms part of
Siwela Sonke’s programme of creating a space for new choreographic languages and
identities to be born and developed.
EDGE takes place at the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre from
February 18 to 21. Tickets are at a subsidised reduced rate of R50 (R20
concessions) booked at the door and in advance through Computicket.
