Directed by Paul Thomas Anderson in 2014, this is a crime
comedy that achieved almost instant cult status. It is based on a novel by
legendary literary recluse Thomas Pynchon. The National Board of Review named
it as one of the 10 best films of 2014, and Joaquin Phoenix was a top contender
for the Best Actor award at the Golden Globes.
A dope-smoking private investigator with very little
ambition beyond the next joint is drawn into a complex kidnap drama that goes
off the rails when his former girlfriend disappears. Finding her alive becomes
