Deadline: June 15,
2016
The Playhouse Company is holding auditions for the
production Sugar Daddies, which will
be presented on the Company’s mobile stage at high schools throughout
KwaZulu-Natal from July 18 to August 12 2016. The production is being re-staged
after a very successful run in 2014 when it played to over 20,000 learners.
Sugar Daddies
focuses on the current and prevalent practice of older, often married, men with
financial means having very young girlfriends. These young girls are often
seeking a way to achieve a better lifestyle without realising the consequences
and implications of their actions. The production highlights the irresponsible
behaviour of these ‘sugar daddies’ or ‘blessers’, as they are now often called,
and seeks to help young women to avoid falling victim to these predators.
Three female actresses are required to audition for the
production for the following characters:
Thandeka (16 years old). Thandeka is a teenager who has just
moved to the community to live with her grandmother after her mother has passed
away. She befriends Lesiwe at school and in a short space of time begins a
relationship with a string of “sugar daddies” around the community. She has
very little financial support, and relies on men to pay her school fees,
cellphone bills, and so forth. She has grown up without a father figure. She contracts
HIV from her affair with Simpiwe, but does not know her status when she sleeps
with other men.
Lesiwe Cele (16 years old). Teenaged Lesiwe is heavily
influenced by her rebellious school friend Thandeka. Encouraged by Thandeka,
she enters into a brief relationship with a “sugar daddy” named Simpiwe.
Nosipho Cele (38 years old). Nosipho is the mother of
Lesiwe, and a compassionate and concerned mother and wife.
