Preparations for The Playhouse Company’s annual Iscathamiya
Competition are well underway, with regional elimination rounds currently
taking place around KwaZulu-Natal.
The Competition this year takes place on September 24, and
will feature winning groups from the regional competitions in the following
regions, and co-ordinated by the following district co-ordinators: Ugu region (Mdumiseni
V Danca); eThekwini region (Muntukaboni M Mbatha); Sisonke region (Bonginhlanhla
A Shezi); uMgungundlovu region (Lucky Goodman Mkhize); Zululand region (N B
Zungu); uMzinyathi region (Motsamai Molefe); Amajuba region (Thulani T Phakathi);
uThukela region (Shisizwe M Nsuntsha); Mbizana region (Thembinkosi H Mditshwa);
Lusikisiki (Ms Z Dzakwa); uMkhanyakude region (Pennington M Mhlanzi); uThungulu
region (Enock Dlamini); and the iLembe region (B A Cibane).
Now in its19th year, The Playhouse Company’s Iscathamiya
Competition sees top-notch groups converge on the Playhouse for an all-night
feast of song and dance, with beautiful voices, swanky costumes and slick moves
the order of the evening.

Competition as part of The Playhouse Company’s mission to support and promote
indigenous South African art forms,” said Playhouse Company Chief Executive
Office and Artistic Director, Linda Bukhosini.
Iscathamiya is the traditional Zulu unaccompanied harmonious
singing and tightly-choreographed dance style performed by mostly male groups,
with the award-winning Ladysmith Black Mambazo having taken the style to
audiences around the world.
