Deadline:
March 30, 2017
Registration opens for The South African
Cultural Observatory’s (SACO) annual conference which will explore the
interface between creative economy and development.
“The conference is an important opportunity
to profile global and local research in the cultural and creative industries
(CCIs) and arts, culture and heritage (ACH) sectors.
“But it will also look at economic impact,
employment figures, statistics and other bedrock information that positions the
CCIs and ACH sectors as a real functioning industry – especially in South
Africa and on the African continent,” said Professor Richard Haines, SACO chief
executive.
The conference coincides with Africa Day
celebrations on May 25, and is scheduled to take place over two days on May 24
and 25 at the Turbine Hall in Johannesburg, South Africa. This is the research
institute’s second national conference since it was established in 2015 by the
Department of Arts and Culture (DAC) to advance research in the field of
cultural information systems.
“We are thrilled to open registration today
and expect an exciting cross-section of researchers, academics industry
professionals and practitioners, organisations working in the CCIs, and
organisers of cultural festivals and events to attend and present.
“The objective of the conference is to
convene actors from across the creative sector and economy to share their
research, so we can establish trends and look for alignment and best practices
to apply to the South African context,” said Haines.
The keynote speakers and programme
highlights will be announced later in March, the SACO said, adding that the
call for papers and presentations under the conference’s major guiding theme is
The Creative Economy & Development –
