(Fiona
Tozer & Dan Wilson)
The Maritzburg Musicians Club will host
Fiona Tozer and Dan Wilson on June 6.
Famed and loved by all, singer-guitarist Fiona
Tozer accompanied by talented bassist Dan Wilson on bass guitar will be
showcasing their epic duo Quark once again. Touring muso friend Jonny Luck will
be performing in KZN for the first time, specialising in his own style of Folk
Booze Blues, cultivated from years of barwork.
Quark is a collaboration between Tozer and Wilson.
They have fused their individual styles to create a new sound, which contains
elements of folk, jazz, funk, rock and probably a few other unexpected
influences. Their original compositions feature guitar, bass, voice and loops,
and explore the theme of space-time and the universe.
Tozer is also a songwriter and guitarist,
who has played at many venues and festivals around the country and was the
headline act at Splashy Fen in 2004. Her music has evolved over time - after
recording three CDs of original songs in folk and acoustic rock style, she went
to study music at university, getting a masters degree in contemporary
classical composition.
Dan Wilson has played with musicians as
diverse as steel guitar legend Mike Cooper, the Waterboys, Annette Peacock, Syd
Kitchen and RISE. He has released five albums with Creeper, an acid jazz outfit
featuring saxophonist Luke Townsend, and has performed on several albums by
local and international musicians. His album Max Roach Park with UK drummer Mark Huggett was nominated for a
SAMA for best jazz album in 2006.
Born and bred Capetonian, Jonny Luck is a
singer/songwriter hidden behind an acoustic guitar. Mixing a blend of whiskey-soaked
blues and fresh upbeat folk, this storyteller will have you reminiscing of
misspent youth, new love and those nights spent drinking at your local watering
hole. Luck is a one-man show incorporating earthy guitar rhythms, passionate
harmonica lines and a worn in soul voice, all backed by the drive of a stomp
box.
Entry R50 and doors open at 19h00. The home
of the Maritzburg Musicians Club, La Casa (formerly The Red Door) is situated
in Quarry Road, off Victoria Road, in Pietermaritzburg. Car guards on duty. More
