Professor Ian Calder will present an
illustrated talk and walkabout on Rorke’s Drift Ceramics in the lecture hall at
the Tatham Art Gallery in Chief Albert Luthuli Street, Pietermaritzburg, on September
1 at 14h30.
Rorke’s Drift, near Dundee in northern
KwaZulu-Natal, is the historical site of the battle between British forces and
Zulu warriors following the battle of Isandlwana in 1879.
In the 1960s a well-known craft centre was
established there by Scandinavian missionaries and teachers. The ceramics
studio became well-known for its unique fusion of African and Western styles
and techniques.
Calder will elaborate on the history of
these studio ceramics which became internationally popular and collectable.
Entry to the lecture and walkabout is free.
Students are encouraged to attend. For more information and to book, email
