Internationally renowned virtuoso pianist Philipp
Richardsen will feature in the next Friends of Music concert on October 17,
2017.
Richardsen was born in Vienna, Austria. He
studied music at both Vienna University of Music and the University of
California, where he obtained a Doctor of Musical Arts degree (summa cum
laude).
He won top prizes and awards in the USA,
Italy and Norway amongst many others. Notable performances include solo
recitals at venues such as Carnegie Hall, the Sydney Opera House, Seoul Arts
Centre, Vienna Musikverein, Vienna Konzerthaus, Munich Gasteig, St.
Martin-in-the-Fields (London), the Harpa (Iceland), and the Elbphilharmonie in
Hamburg.
Richardsen is currently serving as an
associate professor of piano at Mokwon University, Daejeon, South Korea;
additionally, he has hosted The Classical
Collection" a Korean radio broadcast.
His programme will include Franz Schubert’s
Sonata in A major, D 959; Frédéric Chopin’s Ballade no. 1 in g minor, op. 23; Halfdan
Kjerulf’s Idyll (from Pieces op. 4,
no. 2) and Johan Sebastian Bach/Ferruccio Busoni’s Chaconne in d minor (from
Violin Partita no. 2, BWV 1004).
The Prelude Performer (to be announced) for
this recital will be a prize winner from the Let Me Sing school’s opera
competition coordinated and sponsored by I Grandi Tenori. I Grandi Tenori is a
group of opera singers who are dedicated to assisting and mentoring talented
pupils from rural schools to pursue a career in music.
This competition will see 25 learners from
all corners of the province battling for cash prizes of R7,500, R5,000 and R2,500
respectively. In the quest of changing lives, this competition will also award
one full bursary to one lucky learner. Let no deserving learner be deprived an
opportunity to study because of finances!
The Philipp Richardsen concert will take
place at 19h30 on October 17. Tickets R100 (R80 FOM members and R20 orchestral/students)
available at the door.
Friends of Music concerts take place at
19h30 at the Durban Jewish Centre, 44 Old Fort Road (K.E. Masinga Road),
