(Jürg
Koch, keynote speaker)
FLATFOOT Dance Company is hosting an
intentional two-day colloquium on Diversity,
Disability And Dance on January 31 and February 1 2018. It
is an unprecedented meeting of dancers and dance makers who are pushing the
agenda around inclusivity in their dance and dance educational practice.
Dance/Disability/Diversity interrogates new
innovative teaching pedagogy and performance practice for dance in South Africa
(and globally).
The objectives are:
• To push the shared knowledge and
practice-based learning around integrated and disability dance studies in South
Africa - with a focus on revising the idea of dance as a tool for ‘Living
Democracy’ - a term that Flatfoot Dance Company uses to describe its impulses
in dance education and community dance engagement.
• To create a learning space that allows
members of the professional arts community to interface with community-based
organisations, dance practitioners and educators and social workers, in an environment
that pushes and challenges learning and praxis within the disability and arts
sectors.
• To create a space to engender a community
of like-minded practitioners and educators by sharing methodologies,
information and learning in the disability and dance sectors.
• To push the agenda of social cohesion by
placing a focus on contemporary arts and disability that allows international
and national dialogues to speak and practice to the work happening in KwaZulu-Natal.
Special invited guests include Key Note
Speaker/Practitioner: Jürg Koch from Bern, Switzerland.
Presenters also include Unmute Dance
Company (Cape Town); Gerard Samuel (Cape Town); Agulhas Theatre Works (Johannesburg);

and democracy.
