For its 2018 pavilion at Decorex Cape Town,
set to run from the April 27 to May 1, 2018, 100% Design South Africa will
bring leading local handmade ceramics to the fore with a striking exhibition
concept, curated by Cathy O’Clery of Platform Creative Agency.
All the ceramicists participating in 100%
Clay, have been asked to lend their stellar talents to the same challenge: each
must present only one bowl, one jug, one cup and one plate. The idea is to
allow visitors to delight in varying aesthetic styles while appreciating the
versatility of this earthy medium and how age-old techniques can be used to
such contemporary effect.
“For a long time I have believed that
ceramic-making is a design discipline in which South Africa excels. Our artists
and designers are renowned around the world but we rarely celebrate this in our
own country with large collective exhibitions,” explains O’Clery.
“I would like the trade and public who
visit the 100% Design South Africa pavilion at Decorex Cape Town to engage with
the endless possibilities of what working with clay can achieve,” she
continues, “so I have chosen everyday objects which people use.”
All the exhibition pieces will be produced
especially for the exhibition and will have their debut at 100% Clay – in line
with 100% Design South Africa’s focus on encouraging new designer products.
Approximately 20 ceramicists have been selected to participate, including the
iconic names such Clementina van der Walt and rising stars Vorster & Braye.
Visitors will experience both glazed and
unglazed ceramics in a superbly restrained colour palette of white, off-white,
black, grey, brown, terracotta, pale pink, celadon, gold and bronze. Expect a
feat of clay!
