The Centre for Jazz and Popular Music will
present Standard Bank Youth band members, New Age Offering, on April 25, 2018.
After successfully making the selection for
the 2017 Standard Bank National Youth Jazz Band in Grahamstown, the New Age
Offering is an octet of talented young upcoming jazz musicians from Cape Town,
Johannesburg and Durban.
Though the band was formed through the
National Youth Jazz Band, the members have always admired each other as young
artists. Receiving the opportunity to collaborate has been a highlight of their
participation in the National festival, especially for members such as Dalisu
Ndlazi and Thami Mahlangu who have made the selection for three consecutive
years.
As the National Band, they headlined the Grahamstown
National Arts Festival and the Joy of Jazz performing original music. They have
since made their debut performance as an independent collective at The Orbit in
Johannesburg and are now touring nationally with international tours on the
pipeline.
Within the band are graduates and final
year students from the University of KwaZulu-Natal, University of Cape Town and
Tshwane University, all majoring or majored in their respective instruments.
The sound offered by the band is founded on
influences they draw from traditions of jazz and modern sounds. Originating
from different cities across South Africa, there are also compositions which
are a representation of the sounds of their home towns. These young jazz
musicians have been under the mentorship of great South African jazz musicians
and lecturers. They have performed internationally with various ensembles and
participated in exchange programmes with Universities abroad.
The repertoire is a representation of their
journey, experiences and knowledge they have acquired through music at the dawn
of their youth. With this collaboration, they wish to join the community of
young musicians producing music that has the ability to reach wider audiences.
If you have not been to Grahamstown you
will definitely get a feel of what goes down at South Africa’s biggest National
Art Festival.
