This Sunday (July 1, 2018) sees the launch
of the Durban Book Fair in Mitchell Park. Booksellers of Mzansi (BOM), a new
initiative by the Denis Hurley Centre, is one of the drivers of the event.
Recently launched, BOM aims to establish homeless people as booksellers, with
all money generated by the booksellers for them to keep. The idea is to provide
meaningful employment, while encouraging a reading culture in Durban, which was
recently named a UNESCO City of Literature.
In addition to a variety of books for sale
at the fair, there will also be workshops for aspiring writers and
storytellers. While Sunday marks the first book fair, the plan is to make it a
monthly event, with the Denis Hurley Centre also looking for additional venues
for Booksellers of Mzansi to host their book sales. If you have a church or
community group that would be happy to host a book sale, make contact with
Stuart Talbot on email: stuart@denishurleycentre.org
The Durban Book Fair is a free event, and
will be open from 09h00 until 14h00. For further information call 083 778 1991.
The Denis Hurley Centre forms part of the
Durban Liberation Heritage Route, a project of the Durban Local History
Museums.
