(Dumza
Maswana)
The Centre for Jazz and Popular Music will
present vocalist Dumza Maswana on September 5, 2018.08.31
Maswana was born in a village called Bhira
in the Eastern Cape. He composes songs about his life experiences and views as
well as various things that inspires and motivates him. Music has always been a
central part of his upbringing, from his home to his church and community. In high
school, he started an all-male group and then moved to Johannesburg in the late
2000s. Dumza is deeply rooted in his culture and religion so his music does
display his strong sense of tradition and religious beliefs.
He has been described by many as “soulful”
and there’s a jazz element in his music, although he finds it hard to box
himself in a genre. He just wants to make the art and be true to the artist
that he is. His debut album Molo was
executively produced by Luyanda Madope and other producers Nduduzo Makhathini,
Gabriel Stuurman and BandaBanda. This album earned much respect and was
nominated for the South African Music Awards (the SAMAs) for Best African Adult
Album. One of the songs on his debut album Emihle,
is named after his daughter.
Maswana has shared the stage with some of
the country’s top artists including Thandiswa Mazwai, Simphiwe Dana, Ringo
Madlingozi, Tshepo Tshola, Siphokazi, and the legendary Victor Ntoni, to name a
few. He had the rare opportunity to open for the internationally acclaimed duo
Kenny Latimore and Chante More on their visit to South Africa.
He has also performed at major events such
as the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown, the Macufe Festival, the annual
Buyelekhaya Music Festival in East London, and the RiverSong Collaborative Arts
festival in Hamburg. He had the rare opportunity to open for the
internationally acclaimed duo Kenny Latimore and Chante More on their visit to
South Africa.
