(Harry Lock)
A curious man with a camera at Hilton
One of the longest running, constantly-evolving exhibitions
at the Hilton Arts Festival, the Out of
Character exhibition by photographer Harry Lock, can be seen in the foyer
of the Centenary Centre this weekend.
The project that started in 2014 with Lock wandering around
and capturing portraits of some of the festival participants and team while
off-duty has grown as Lock has added more portraits taken every year. Now in
its fifth year, visitors will be able to see the portraits captured at last
year’s festival adorning the walls.
Over the years, Lock has photographed a number of well-known
performers, both local and from distant shores. He is the commissioned
photographer for the Durban International Blues Festival and has fond images of
guitarist Dan Patlansky, Nibs van der Spuy and husband and wife team, Jaspar
and Kale Lepac.
His photography passions include a fascination with shapes
of faith where he has a collection of shots of a wide variety of religious
buildings discovered during his travels. Entrances to farms and towns have also
caught his roving creative eye, which he describes as the dual notions of
displaying home and decoration.
Apart from capturing his own images, Lock also enjoys
sharing his knowledge with others and to this end facilitates various workshops
and courses: his most recent was a black and white photography course. “Even in
this digital age there is something mysterious and magical about a black and
white image.” he shares. “With black and white, there is no relying on colour,
so shape, form and tone which become the critical elements in the composition
of the photograph. It is said that an image is compelling, not because of what
is being photographed, but how it is captured.”
Catch Lock as he explores the art of the portrait, capturing
a variety of artists that will be a part of the 26th festival.
The festival would not be possible without the generous
support of Hilton College, Grindrod Bank, Black Coffee Design, DWR
Distribution, Extreme Events, Bidvest Car Rental, KZN Dept of Arts &
Culture, Redlands Hotel, Assitej South Africa, Loud Crowd, Sappi, BASA, RMB and
Corona.
