“What are you hiding beneath those waters?”
Is the question Nomvula asks her distant friend.
Nomvula lives on land and Makhi lives in
water; they both attempt to make sense of Makhi's waters and eventually negotiate,
meeting each other halfway.
In
These Waters is a contemporary play devised by the
Honours Contemporary Performance students at the University of KwaZulu-Natal Pietermaritzburg
and directed by multidisciplinary artist, Push Nqelenga. The play captures the
complex ways water has been used to make meaning for ourselves and the world
around us. Using old and modern Zulu myths around water, the play demonstrates
how these South African imageries shape how we come to understand fear, love
and loss.
In
These Waters runs at the Hexagon Studio Theatre on
the UKZN Pietermaritzburg campus from October 31 to November 3, 2018. Performed
in isiZulu and English by the Honours Contemporary Performance class 2018, the
production runs for 55 minutes. Set design is by Tamantha Hammerschlag.
Performances Wednesday to Friday at 19h30
and on Saturday at 15h00. Tickets R50 (R30 students) booked through hexagon@ukzn.ac.za
