On Wednesday October 3, 2018, the Centre
for Jazz and Popular Music will present The Brass Showcase.
The Brass Showcase will feature the UKZN
Big Band which features a programme that ranges from classic and student
arrangements of contemporary music. The Big Band have also played arrangements
by John Kordalewski of the legendary Ndikho Xaba’s music such as Mad Mad,
Nomusa and Moon Gemini. These arrangements are imaginative, modern,
sophisticated, highly technical and supremely musical all at once.
The UKZN Big BAND is growing in size and
has truly instilled confidence in the younger players of the Band. Players
include Obankeng Thamage and Tazzlo Jacobs on piano/keyboard. Stanley Matlou
and Phila Makhubu on drums. Blessing Thwala on bass. Curt Rix, Phuti Mofakeng,
Sinalo Zul and, Mondli Gcaba on trumpets.
The band also features Simone Van Niekerk,
Nwabisa Kheswa, Zintle Msane and Tseleng Mokhatla on saxophones. Siyalo Zulu,
Kgethi Nkotsi and Mthunzi Mkize on trombones. Nombusoi Ratsha, Nomthandazo
Madiya and Menzi Cele on vocals.
Also participating with their ensembles will
be Siyalo Zulu and Kgethi Nkotsi as well as Sinalo Zulu who will perform Like that all by Christian Scott.
The Brass Showcase takes place at The
Centre for Jazz and Popular music (CJPM), Level 2, Shepstone Building at UKZN
Howard College Campus on October 3, 2018, at 18h00 (doors open at 17h30)
