The Playhouse Company, an Agency of the
Department of Arts and Culture, will hold auditions for fulltime professional
performers to take part in its premiere production of Mbongeni Ngema’s latest
stage creation, Nelson Mandela Through
the Eyes of an Artist. This musical production will be presented in Durban
from March 29 to May 5, 2019. Auditions will be held in Durban at The Playhouse
on November 24, 2018, with call backs on November 25 Further auditions will be
held in Johannesburg in December (dates and venue to be announced).
A limited number of singer-actors are
required for principal, sub principal and ensemble parts. Aspirant performers
must be of professional standard, and be able to sing, dance and act. Young
performers must be at least 18 years in order to audition for roles. Aspirants
need to know at least one of the following three songs (a pianist will be provided,
however they can bring a back-track should they wish): Isoka Lami (from album Baba
Ka’Mdudu); Greatest Love of All (Whitney Houston); Good Black Woman (Brenda Fassie).
Casting includes the following characters:
-Majavajava, a vibrant and flamboyant young man with a gift of speech, great
acting, musicality and a superb dancer whose range includes tap to modern and
any other required form of dance routine
-Albertina Sisulu (lead singer), a middle
aged woman who has a great presence and commanding vocal range
-Walter Sisulu, youngish to middle aged
man, who has a lovable character
-Oliver Tambo, a soft spoken attorney in
his early thirties, a commanding personality
-Nelson Mandela, a tall young man in his
early thirties with a charismatic appearance, also with a gift of speech
-Adelaide Tambo (lead singer), young lady
in her early thirties, who can also double up as a singer/dancer
-Evelyn Mase, a young lady in her early
thirties, who can also double up as a singer/dancer
-Justice (Nelson Mandela’s cousin), a
singer/dancer
-Winnie Mandela, a young beautiful girl, in
her mid-twenties or early thirties, with a striking appearance and a beautiful
singing voice, who has the capacity to handle dialogue
-White Magistrate, young to middle aged,
preferably Afrikaans-speaking male
-White Prosecutor (also plays Advocate
George Bizos), young English speaking male
-Bram Fisher, White Lawyer to the Rivonia
men, very astute and intelligent, in his mid thirties
-Judge Quartus De Wet also plays Swanepoel,
very calm and determined Afrikaans Judge, who will double up as Winnie Mandela’s
Interrogator in detention
Prosecutor Pervy Yutar, will double up with
the other white characters
-Zindzi and Zenani, early teenage daughters
of Winnie and Nelson Mandela
-Bishop, a friend of Winnie Mandela.
Auditions start at 10h00 and will be held
in the Playhouse Studio 410 in Durban.
- Each candidate will be given five minutes
each to audition. Walk-ins will not be entertained;
- Bookings are between 09h00 to 12h00 and
from 14h00 to 16h00 (no voice mail messages will be returned);
- Candidates might be expected to wait for
their audition;
- Please bring a headshot or full length
photograph, as well as a resume with you to your audition;
- Candidates should arrive at least 30
minutes before their audition time;
- Dance Audition: Dance auditions will take place on November 25,
2018, and will be done in a group format. Candidates should be dressed ready to
dance;
- Rehearsals for the production will take
place at The Playhouse in Durban from February 18 until March 17, 2019.
