GILLIAN BRUNINGS TO LEAVE THE DURBAN ACTORS STUDIO

(Gillian Brunings)

Managing Director to the Durban Actors Studio (DAS), Gillian Brunings, is to leave the organisation early next year. Her husband has been offered a position in the UK and Brunings and her two children will be joining him mid-2019.

“I am incredibly happy to announce that Nicole Theunissen, who has been with Durban Actors Studio since 2014, will take over the running of the Studio from January 2019,” says Brunings.

Theunissen holds qualifications in BDram, BA Hons Drama, MA Drama Choreography. She has practical and academic experience in theatre and the dramatic arts, with a focus on Choreography and Physical Theatre. During her postgraduate training, she served as a Graduate Assistant in tutoring undergraduates. Upon completion of her MA, she spent one year as a lecturer in the University of Zululand’s Creative Arts department.

Theunissen will be supported by the current team which includes Sunny Sibiya and Sam Freesewith a couple of new faces joining the team in 2019.

“Faces may change BUT our core principles will always be to 1) provide access to expert arts education, 2) to inspire people to serve their craft, and 3) to propagate performance -  these these principles are why we are here and why we will remain the #1-part time, youth and adult, practical performance training facility in Kwazulu-Natal; #leavingalegacy,” explains Brunings.

“I will always be honoured and blessed to have had the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of so many young people, directly or indirectly, through Durban Actors Studio. To the students I have had the privilege to personally teach over the last 11 years, thank you for allowing me to learn, share and grow with you in this mad world of theatre, never forget the joy of performing and remember “a dream is great, but life only changes when you start to create!” she continues.

“Please join me in wishing success, full houses and an abundance of LAMDA examination distinctions to the 2019 Durban Actors Studio teaching team and to every student who passes through their doors. I am looking forward to watching, with absolute pride, the amazing work they will produce into 2019 and beyond.”
