(Janet
Welch)
The classical music world was saddened to learn
of the death of Janet Welch, former marketing manager of the KZN Philharmonic
Orchestra who died on December 27, 2018, after a long battle with cancer.
At her special request, no funeral or
memorial celebration was to be held.
Bongani Tembe, the CEO and Artistic
Director of the KZN Philharmonic remembers her fondly: “Janet was a very kind
person and she loved the orchestra and supported me as CEO both in my work and
personally. She was always pleasant to everybody – I don’t remember ever having
had a single complaint about her. She was a lady and she epitomised dignity.
She continued to love the orchestra and never missed a concert unless she was
unwell. She shall be missed.”
Friend and colleague Stavros Anthias adds: “I
knew Janet for over 20 years, and our symphony concerts seats were next to each
other for all this time. She was an elegant, eloquent lady who was kindness and
graciousness personified. She was always so caring of others, and had a
wonderful sense of humour. She will be greatly missed.”
Welch also worked for the Clairwood Turf
Club at one stage and The Sporting Post has carried a heartwarming tribute to
her at https://www.sportingpost.co.za/2018/12/clairwood-bygone-era/
