The Durban Review is a literary committee
formed early this year by a team of published women authors, Zainab Priya Dala,
Sylvia Garib and Kripa Devar. Their vision is to provide philanthropic and
literary support, and instil an ethos of reading and writing into the Durban
culture. The first Edition of the Durban Review focuses on Women’s Writing. An
anthology commenced in 2018 with a call for voluntary submissions from women of
all walks of life, both novice and experienced writers and in any of South Africa’s
official languages, as well as international languages if applicable.
The mission of empowering women through
writing and telling stories saw the eventual publication of the book with: Drumbeats From Africa, Writings From Women
Of Africa. Durban and KwaZulu-Natal domiciled writers as well as those with
ties to Durban saw 50 stories and poems make their way into this Inaugural
Anthology. The largest vision for the publication was to support and empower
women.
“We know there are hundreds of associations
advocating women empowerment in society and globally. There are women still
divided or marginalized in society -hundreds of women who need to change their
lives, yearn to share their truths and their stories. As women, we wondered how
we can support and empower our sisters to live meaningful lives. We are
passionate authors ourselves and we believe in our own writings and so, we
decided to create a supportive platform we know best, that is, through the art
of writing,” say the organisers.
The stories and poetry are from South
African women given an opportunity to discover their own voices through writing
- stories of hardships, mental and physical abuse and suffering, and other
stories of achievements, motivations and humour.
A journey that began with three women
authors has now reached fruition.
The Durban Review in Association with The
Consulate of India and Durban University of Technology are pleased to announce
the Cover Reveal Evening and Official Inauguration Event of Drumbeats From Africa.
The event will take place on February 9,
2019, is a celebration of the efforts of the team, the collaborators and most
importantly, the 50 women writers and poets who have added their footprint to
the published works that Durban can be proud of.
