The Traveling Wilburys happened by
coincidence. It was never planned …
Over dinner with Jeff Lynne and Roy
Orbison, George Harrison asked Jeff for his help to get a song together for his
Cloud Nine solo album. Roy said he
would like to come along and watch. They called Bob Dylan and asked if they
could record in his garage studio. George went to fetch his guitar from Tom
Petty who asked if he could also come along to the session. George wrote a
little part for Roy to sing and thought he may as well involve Bob, Tom and
Jeff. Trying to think of a song title, George saw a box in the studio and it
was marked ‘Handle With Care’ which inspired the title and lyrics for the song.
George thought that if they only took one
day to record the song, all they needed was nine days to record an album. With
huge international success, their first album was released in October 1988
selling over five million copies. Five guys with star stature in their own
rights enjoyed an ego-free collaboration. Everybody sang, everybody wrote,
everybody produced and had great fun doing so.
Join Barry Thomson and The Reals as they
