TRIBUTE TO THE TRAVELLING WILBURYS

The Traveling Wilburys happened by coincidence. It was never planned …

Over dinner with Jeff Lynne and Roy Orbison, George Harrison asked Jeff for his help to get a song together for his Cloud Nine solo album. Roy said he would like to come along and watch. They called Bob Dylan and asked if they could record in his garage studio. George went to fetch his guitar from Tom Petty who asked if he could also come along to the session. George wrote a little part for Roy to sing and thought he may as well involve Bob, Tom and Jeff. Trying to think of a song title, George saw a box in the studio and it was marked ‘Handle With Care’ which inspired the title and lyrics for the song.

George thought that if they only took one day to record the song, all they needed was nine days to record an album. With huge international success, their first album was released in October 1988 selling over five million copies. Five guys with star stature in their own rights enjoyed an ego-free collaboration. Everybody sang, everybody wrote, everybody produced and had great fun doing so.

Join Barry Thomson and The Reals as they pay tribute to the Traveling Wilburys at Rhumbelow Theatre in Durban and, later, in Kloof. With Barry Thomson on guitar and vocals, Dawn Selby as musical director on keyboards and vocals, Mali Sewell on drums and vocals, Jason Andrew on bass and vocals with guest guitarist Shaun Dragt.

In the repertoire will be hit songs by the supergroup ‘Traveling Wilburys’, including Handle With Care, End Of The Line and She’s My Baby. The show also features the individual talents of each band member Jeff Lynne (Electric Light Orchestra), George Harrison (The Beatles), Tom Petty, Roy Orbison and Bob Dylan.
