MISS MARSHMELLOW'S RAINBOW SURPRISE REVIEW

(Shika Budhoo)

Overall, an entertaining show for the kids with a colouring competition afterwards. (Review by Verne Rowin Munsamy)

School holidays are upon us and learners are invited to a host of events to casually pass the time before the grind of third term. The theatre venues in Durban have done their best to ensure that kids of all ages are not idle with their thoughts. The Rhumbelow Theatre in Umbilo has a variety of shows on offer, one of them being Shika Budhoo’s Miss Marshmellow's Rainbow Surprise.

Budhoo is no stranger to Durban children's theatre audiences. After relocating to Johannesburg, she now marks her return to our shores with this melodically witty and thought-provoking show.

The narrative follows the trepidations and anxieties of Miss Marshmellow who ventures on a quest to quell her fears, seeking the magical powers of the Rainbow to take back to her home. Along the way, we meet some of her friends, Sunny the Sunflower, Lemon Drop the Leaf and, of course, boys and girls from the audience to help her along the way. The themes aspire to teach self-confidence, bravery and to accept our fears as they are part of life. We are treated to modern twists of old favourite songs and some wise puppets filled with plenty wisdom.

The set is simple with just a white screen hung centre stage. This allowed the lighting to reflect the rainbow of colours needed to fill the space. Another clever use of the screen was to make shadow puppets on the reverse to depict Miss Marshmellow's journey to the clouds and back home.

Budhoo shows off her vocal talent and artistry with songs and accents that provide plenty of variety and flavour. I would have liked to see a little more physical direction but this does not deter from the essence of the show. One of the many nuggets tossed to the audience was to laugh, sing and dance your way through fearful moments and also to look change in the eye with both fear as well as excitement. Overall, an entertaining show for the kids with a colouring competition afterwards.
