The Arts & Culture Trust (ACT) has
announced an open call for applications for the ACT Development Grant in
Literature. Applications for the ACT Development Grant in Literature will be
accepted until Sunday, June 30, 2019.
The Arts & Culture Trust (ACT) and its
longstanding partner Nedbank are proud to announce the first of two sets of ACT
Development Grants for the 2019 funding cycle. ACT invites professional,
creative literature projects, planned for realisation between July 2019 and
July 2019, to apply.
Each ACT Development Grant iteration is
divided into two sets of grants, one set is disbursed to emerging/mid-level
artists and organisations and the other to established artists and
organisations. One of the aims of projects submitted for consideration should
be to increase organisational sustainability or the individuals’ skillset.
Projects should also have far-reaching benefits.
To be eligible for the emerging/mid-level
ACT Development Grant, organisations must have one or more years’ experience
working professionally and experience at managing budgets of less than R50,000.
Emerging/mid-level artists must have been
working professionally for at least one year.
For artists to be considered established,
they must have been working professionally for five or more years and have a
proven track record of successful projects with budgets exceeding R50,000.
For organisations to be considered
established, they must have been in operation for three or more years and have
a proven track record of successful projects with budgets exceeding R50,000.
Emerging/mid-level artists or organisations
are eligible for one of five grants, each worth R30,000. Established artists
and organisations are eligible for one of three grants, each worth R80,000. To
apply for either set of ACT Development Grants, artists and organisations are
invited to complete the online application form. http://www.act.org.za/blog/2019devlitappl/
Relaunched in 2018, the ACT Development
Grant now features two calls for discipline-focused applications at different
times of the calendar year. This first set of grants for 2019 focus on projects
and works with a strong literature focus. Applications are encouraged for
interdisciplinary or multidisciplinary work with the nominated discipline as a
core component.
“We are interested in the ways in which new
media and new forms of arts are developing alongside traditional arts. This can
include works of poetry, fiction and non-fiction, plays, new media literature
etc.,” ACT CEO Marcus Desando says, “With this new discipline focused
grant-making, we have seen a number of very interesting collaborative works
come to the fore and this cycle promises to be no different. We are excited to
see how interdisciplinary interpretations can be translated using literature.”
As the flagship programme of the partnership
between ACT and Nedbank, the ACT Development Programme has supported more than
800 organisations and projects nationwide over the past 24 years, a
contribution valued at more than R21 million in total.
Tobie Badenhorst, Head of Group
Sponsorships and Cause Marketing at Nedbank says, “At Nedbank, we are cognisant
of the power that lies in storytelling, not only in preserving our country’s
rich heritage, but also in translating everyday experiences through literature.
It is for this reason that we continue to support initiatives such as the ACT
Development Grant in Literature through the Nedbank Arts Affinity Programme.”
Only South African nationals may apply and
projects must take place in South Africa. Allocation of grants is at the
discretion of the ACT board of trustees. The decision with regard to all
applications for funding is final and no further correspondence will be entered
into.
