(Nafas
Frenzel)
Fun, fellowship and lots of spirit run
through the Pietermaritzburg Amateur Music Society’s (PAMS) Feel The Spirit concert at Cordwalles
Preparatory School in Pietermaritzburg on Sunday, August 25, 2019.
The programme includes several favourites
from the choral repertoire, but this time the focus is on secular and
entertaining music.
Five famous evocative spirituals from a
cycle of seven spirituals, Feel the
Spirit by John Rutter will get the spirit moving. Rutter arranged the music
for mezzo-soprano soloist, choir and orchestra/piano. Japan-born Nafas Frenzel
will be the guest soloist for the occasion.
Frenzel is a musician and music teacher (voice
and drums). She was born and raised in Japan, being an instrumentalist since
the age of 9. She developed her passion for music and advanced her skills when
she came to South Africa to study at Epworth High School in 2013. Singing
became her main focus, as she was involved with several choirs, including the
KZN Midlands Youth Choir. During her time at Epworth she was trained as a soloist
under Johan Grobler. After matriculating, she achieved her DipABRSM in singing
under Simon Bester and continues to grow as a young soprano.
The second part of the programme includes
music from Broadway Musicals – a medley from Oklahoma and highlights form The
Sound of Music. Also included will be The
Exodus Song from the 1960 film Exodus
and the old-time favourite Hello Dolly
from the American romantic comedy musical film based on the Broadway production
of the same name.
The Drakondale Girls Choir will join the
PAMS choir and perform a few songs from their light, entertaining music
programme.
Botes Gresse will conduct the PAMS and
Drakondale Girls’ Choirs and Jacques Heyns and Matthew Hoffman will accompany
the choirs respectively.
The concert takes place at 15h30 on August
25 at Cordwalles Preparatory School in Pietermaritzburg. Tickets R70 available
at the door. Contact Helen White (Chair) on 083 264 5705 or Judy Lawrence
