Durban arts entrepreneurs MADE (Mzansi Arts
Development) are opening an arts institute to be based at the Diakonia Centre
in the inner city, to teach music skills and dance instruction to encourage
live arts practitioners to have the qualifications to formalise their passion
and become more employable.
“With ever increasing unemployment, we are
aware of the need to nurture arts entrepreneurs who can become self-employed,
quality for formal jobs and ultimately employ others,” explains MADE’s Lerato
Molemong. “We want to support arts practitioners by offering an achievable
formal qualification to help them on the career path. We understand the gap in
the arts-education market to be bridging experience and passion, with
affordable and achievable formal qualifications which are recognised and respected
among employers.
“The qualifications which we offer are The
Further Education and Training Certificate in Music (SAQA ID: 65029) which
comprises of 26 modules with 157 credits to attain a qualification in music. It
is a NQF level 4, Full Qualification with duration of one year (full–time). The
attainment of the Further Education and Training Certificate in Dance
Instruction Qualification (SAQA ID: 79986) consists of 23 modules for the
completion of the qualifications totalling to a minimum of 143 credits. It is a
NQF level 4, Full Qualification with duration of one year (full–time).
“We will be offering short courses as well
which are unit standards that form part of the qualifications. Short courses
that will be our main focus are Music Business, Ethics and Professionalism in
the Music Industry, Starting a Business Venture, Arts Administration, Creating
Original Performance, Directing a Production, Stage Management and Adjudicating
a Dance Performance.
“Lucky Cele and Mduduzi Mdladla will be the
facilitators of our programmes. They are both qualified facilitators and
assessors recognized by CATHSSETA,” said Molemong.
“As an added advantage, we will also be
offering a non-accredited programme on Music Production tutored by Mfundo
Shangase famously known as “Tonic Jazz”. Music Production is a very interesting
topic with different aspects within the music component. By attending this
programme, the participants will attain skills in programming, producing,
editing and recording music,” she added.
The training venue is the beautiful
Diakonia Centre – the multi-purpose hub in the heart of the city, favoured by
tenants working in the social justice, faith and NGO space, and home to
Diakonia Council of Churches, the inter-church agency working for a more just
society.
