(An
example of Ewok’s work in Durban)
Early Childhood Development to benefit from
exciting FNB sponsored Festival Project.
Thanks to the generosity of First National
Bank, the 2019 Hilton Arts Festival is proud to announce an exciting and unusual
“to auction” project. Festival-goers will be able to watch the art being
created and auctioned before their very eyes!
Come to the Hilton Arts Festival (in the
grounds of Hilton College near Pietermaritzburg), make your way to the FNB Art
Block to watch EWOK transform the side of an entire building on Friday and
Saturday September 13 and 14.
This iconic professional painter and
aerosol artwork specialist, has an intriguing
plan up his sleeve. Record your
bid while having a selfie taken with EWOK …. he may even need your help!
If you cannot be there, email your bid in
advance to admin@hiltonfestival.co.za no later than September 12. At 18h00 on Saturday September 14 there will
be a live auction, taking the highest pre-recorded bid as the reserve price.
iPalette (plying on the prominence of
digital painting in cutting edge contemporary art and design) ,
#wonderwall, #helpinghands are all clues
to the theme of the artwork.
To know more you will simply have to be
there to see it happen. And then … you
can also be part of the rolling auction enabling you to “buy” the artwork (and
an original EWOK signed canvas to take home with you). All funds raised from
the auction will go to several Early Childhood Development charities.
Shaun Edmeston, Head of Niches at FNB
Business, said: “we are excited to partner with the Hilton Arts Festival to
make the innovative “art to auction” project a reality. Art is an important
part of our history and continues to play a significant role in shaping the
culture of society as well as Early Childhood Development. FNB remains
committed to supporting initiatives that not only promote nation building, but
empower and make a meaningful difference in people’s lives.”
Paul Venter, Executive Director of Art and
Culture at Hilton College, said: “Graffiti and Street Art is relevant to all
people of all ages – it inspires thought and creativity amongst children in
their early years, teenagers trying to make sense of the world and adults who
enjoy being challenged. All festival visitors will be interested in this EWOK
piece and it’s wonderful that all proceeds go to a good cause.”
Everything iainEWOKrobinson knows about
painting murals he learned from Graffiti and Street Art.
As an established Hip Hop activist and
educator he combines his roots in urban art with his passion for teaching. With
over 15 years experience as a professional aerosol artist he has clocked up
walls from Paris to Mumbai. Most of his work is on home soil and he has enjoyed
painting around the country, racking up a list of out of the way walls from
Underberg to Grahamstown. A pioneering member of Durban’s original What Kind
crew, he has participated on projects with South African legends Falko and
Faith47, as well as collaborating regularly with fellow Durbanite, DaneStops.
Ewok is a member of the KZN Society for the
Arts. A regular collaborator with the gallery, having worked on a number of
prominent murals on site and nearby in Glenwood, he also conducts workshops as
part of the gallery’s ongoing arts education programming.
In 2014, Ewok was among the Mail and
Guardian 200 Young South Africans selection. He is a featured artist in
Graffiti South Africa (Schiffer Publishing, 2014). In 2016, he exhibited on
canvas at the African Art Centre as part of group show The Shift. He was selected by the KZNSA to paint a 20th anniversary
mural around the theme “Green City”.
