Lauren Mulligan.
“I hope that Explore! Awesome South African Artists introduces you to some of
our great artists working today so you can go on and learn more about them.
Enjoy this book and know that you can become an artist yourself if you really
want to.” – Cobi Labuscagne (Foreword)
South Africa is filled with many vibrant,
skilled contemporary artists – artists who create beautiful and exciting works
about the world around them and about who they are. Explore! Awesome South African Artists lets children dive right
into the South African contemporary art scene, showcasing the diverse paths of
the artists and the fascinating artworks they create.
Some of South Africa’s finest living
artists such as William Kentridge, Nandipha Mntambo and Penny Siopis, Banele
Khoza, Zander Blom, Billie Zangewa and many more, grace the pages of this funky
children’s book. With this book, aspiring young artists will find their own
South African artist to look up to and will be a great edition to their
bookshelf.
Labuscagne holds advanced degrees in
painting and animation from Michaelis School of Fine Art and Wits University.
Before joining Artlogic to produce the FNB JoburgArtFair, she worked and taught
in the fields of software and visual art. In 2011, she received a PhD as a
doctoral fellow at the Wits Institute for Social and Economic Research. She has
been part of the FNB JoburgArtFair team for the past 11 years and is the
Director of Artlogic. She is the mother of Lunga and Ellen Mambo and lives in
Johannesburg.
Mulligan is a storyteller. Her curiosity
leads her to things you don’t often see on television or learn about in school.
The stories she collects take on different firms, like drawings, photographs
and short films. She was named one of South Africa’s 20 emerging black womxn
photographers by Between 10&5 and completed a Master’s in Film &
Television at Wits University in 2018. She lives in Johannesburg, but her
imagination is there and everywhere else.
