Alliance Francaise de Durban, The Market
Theatre Lab in association with IFAS presents Ionesco’s Rhinoceros at The Courtyard Theatre, DUT, from October 25 to 26,
2019.t
Rhinoceros (1939) is an emblematic work from the Romanian-French playwright
Eugène Ionesco, one of the foremost figures of the French avant-garde theatre
and forefather of the Theatre of the Absurd.
This year Kwasha! Theatre gives their own
contemporary interpretation of this thought-provoking tale - exploring the
tragic situation of human politics through the use of fantastical images. The
play depicts an imaginary epidemic of "rhinoceritis", a disease that
frightens all the inhabitants of a city and soon transforms them into
rhinoceroses. It addresses the themes of conformism and resistance to political
power.
Directed by Vanessa Cook, co-directed by
Monageng ‘Vice’ Motshabiis. Kwasha! thrives on making work that is bold and
confronts our current socioeconomic environment.
Rhinoceros has performances on October 25 at 10h00 (R30 scholars, pensioners)
and 19h00 as well as on October 26 at 19h00. Tickets for both evening shows R80
(R30 scholars, pensioners)
