The UKZN Drama Studies in Pietermaritzburg
will present Two from November 11 to
13, 2019, at the Hexagon Studio Theatre.
Siphokasi is a young woman coming to terms
with her sexuality. Shadowed by an imaginary twin; Thulisa, who died before
birth, the two girls perform alone in the bedroom. Thulisa shares the bed with
her mother, but when Siphokasi is around, her mother is nowhere to be seen. She
is with the rest of the family, in the other room. Nothing more than the muffle
of voices, the cry of a domestic argument, the blare of the television set.
Alone in their bedroom, Siphokasi and
Thulisa summon the herd of elephants who hide beneath the bed. These are the
elephant of the body, the elephant of love, the elephant of G -d that of Mother
and the elephant of loneliness. Each elephant reveals a different aspect of
story. It is through the elephants that the complexity of Thulisa’s transition
from childhood to adulthood, between town and township and the world of the
living and those we are forced to leave behind is unveiled.
