African filmmakers are taking their power
back to ignite their passion for storytelling.
This week’s episode of Inside Africa, CNN,
on January 24, 2020, meets revered short filmmakers who are trying to ignite
cinema culture in a township space and modernizing old folk tales such as
Nongqawuse to teach about and question beliefs.
It was ten years ago, when a group of
filmmakers embarked on a mission to see to the realization of a venture that
would serve as a vehicle to showcase short films, and so SHNIT was born.
Since then, short filmmakers have been able
to take their stories across South African borders and beyond. Renowned actors
and playwright such as John Kani are today educating and inspiring young
filmmakers to find their voice and to tell stories that highlight the enormous
social disparities and social issues in the world. From here, it could only be
from South Africa to the global stage for these young creative story tellers.
