“80s vs 90s” is a feel
good show which brought back lots of happy memories and special moments. It had
me smiling and singing long after the cast took their final bow. (Review by

Hop into The Barnyard’s Time Machine and take a fun trip
back to the 80s and 90s!
There’s nothing quite like music to transport you back to a
time or place. Music evokes emotions, it allows you to re-live moments in time
and 80s vs 90s, currently on at The
Barnyard at Suncoast, does just that.
It’s a fun show incorporating some fabulous music from the
80s and 90s. Typical of the Barnyard format there’s a talented small cast, a
brilliant live band and lots of audience participation. To get the fun started
the audience is divided in two with one half supporting the 80’s and the other
the 90’s, so there’s lots of 80’s AWESOME and 90’s LEKKA as each battle for
supremacy takes place!
The cast got our feet tapping right from the start with a
fabulous rendition of the Big Mountain hit Baby
I love Your Way. Continuing in the 90’s Payton Amber’s voice was pure
velvet in Alannah Myles Black Velvet.
The show features something for everyone from ballads like
Whitney Houston’s I Will Always Love You to
rock anthems from bands like ACDC and Metallica. The Reggae challenge which
featured Bob Marley’s Buffalo Soldier
and UB40’s Can’t Help Falling in Love
had the crowd singing along loudly.
The Local is Lekka set show cased the immense talents of
Mduduzi Khumalo, who had the audience up on their feet dancing to Mango
Groove’s Special Star whilst he shone on the pennywhistle.
Another stand out moment for me was Calli Thompson’s musical
arrangement of Bryan Adam’s (Everything I Do) I Do It For You which was masterfully mixed with Whitney Houston’s I Will Always Love You and featured
singer Thembelihle Benenengu at her best.
This show really is very enjoyable and it includes a
wonderful collection of hits. I had forgotten how many great songs there were
during those two decades, to be quite honest I have a hard time remembering
some of the simplest day to day things but I was amazed at my brain’s uncanny
ability to remember lyrics! The minute the band started playing the intro to
the 1982 Joe Cocker hit, Up Where We
Belong and my brain kicked in and I joined the rest of the audience belting
out “Love lift us up where we belong…”
whilst images from the movie An
Officer and a Gentleman came flooding back.
