KZNSA’S MEET THE ARTIST: VUYOLWETHU NDAKISA

(Right: Vuyolwethu Ndakisa)

During this lockdown, the KZNSA Gallery in Durban would like to introduce artists it has worked and collaborated with, in its new series: Meet the Artist. Have some fun with them, collect their art, and watch their Q&A videos on the Instagram and Facebook pages.

"We're looking forward to hosting Vuyolwethu Ndakisa's first solo at the KZNSA later this year in the next instalment of the Young Artists’ Project. Get to know her better in our Meet the Artist series and watch her Q&A on Instagram or Facebook,” says a KZNSA representative.

Ndakisa’s work explores historical and contemporary themes of life as a Black South African woman from the rural areas, and depicts observed experiences of this. The choice of material for each work is determined by the theme she explores, with materiality enhancing the message.

Ndakisa has participated in a number of group shows, one of which was an international exhibition where she exhibited alongside Nelson Makamo. Her work is held in private collections, including JP Morgan Chase Bank.

Q & A Session:

How do you know the KZNSA?

I learnt about the gallery and visited it while I was a student at the Durban University of Technology, and I follow their social media pages.

What gets you out of bed in the morning?

Knowing that there is work to be done. Whether it’s work that needs to be completed or new work, or something new to learn.

What is the first art supply you will buy after lockdown?

Paper and a sketchbook.

What is essential?

Mental health. With all the changes happening in a short space of time, it can be very overwhelming. Finding a place where a person can find stability or escape all of the clutter and noise is essential at this time. I hope that everybody has that place where they can find peace for their minds.

What is the best part about being an artist?

It’s how people respond to my work. Whether it’s favourable or it’s not, I really enjoy that people can engage or start conversations sparked by my work.
