EMJONDOLO ARTS IN ACTION

Exploring the response to CoViD-19 through art and music.

Mzansi Arts Development presents Emjondolo Arts in Action – a participative development programme looking at the social impact of Covid-19 on artists living in informal settlements in Durban, told through music and art. The resulting music concert and artworks will be shared online.

Emjondolo Arts in Action is supported by the Department of Arts and Culture, KZN; Durban Art Gallery; INK ABM and Vibe FM. The project is two-fold – the writing, performing and recording of a song inspired by Covid-19 – and a virtual art exhibition.

A song, called We Shall Overcome Covid 19 written and arranged by Lucky Cele working together with Gugu Diva, Iris and Perfect Harmony choir have created a musical response to the pandemic. The song is currently available for download on iTunes, Google paly, Deezer and Spotify.

Six artists have been selected and will be commissioned to make pieces visually showing their response to Covid-19. These works and the accompanying stories of the artists who made the works, will be available to be viewed online as a virtual exhibition as of Friday September 18, 2020.
