Jazz meets Poetry in virtual concert featuring Jaedon Daniel and Page.
In collaboration with iSupport Creative Business, the University of KwaZulu-Natal’s Centre for Creative Arts and Centre for Jazz and Popular Music presents a monthly series of performances supported by Concerts SA. The latest virtual concert features pianist Jaedon Daniel and his band and poet Page.
For Durban pianist and producer Jaedon Daniel, the art of learning and embracing jazz piano has been his calling. In this concert, he is playing with Riley Giandhari on drums and Freeman Gumede on bass guitar. The set he is playing is inspired by Picasso’s blue period from 1901 to 1904.
“My set forms compositions that follow unorthodox structures in terms of chords and the way the melody sits over the chords. The concept was to go back where I started writing, which is on the piano, which goes back to Pablo saying I’m painting in blue and only in blue,” says Daniel.
Daniel is part of the jazz and Hip Hop fusion band Blvck Crystals, and he plays keys for renowned South African musician Kyle Deutsch. His uncle, award-winning musician Melvin Peters, inspired him to play the piano when he turned 10. He then went on to study jazz piano after matriculating. In terms of his solo career, his first album, Hold The Game, was released in 2018.
Nkululeko Ngwenya, affectionately known as Page is a 27-year-old poet and poetry curator from Durban. Succumbing to the desire to explore lyrics and his place in them, Page started experimenting with hip hop in the early years of school. He was introduced to spoken word in high school where from then he has soared. His influences range from Lebo Mashile, Andrea Gibson, and Buddy Wakefield to Saul Williams, Tumi from The Volume and Myesha Jenkins
“It was quite an experience to collaborate with Jaedon Daniel with my poem Freefalling. The poem is about a love lost, and the melancholic feeling of it was so well-captured by the sound of the keys,” says Page.
This programme is part of a unique joint curation between the Centre Creative Arts and Centre for Jazz & Popular Music, both existing at UKZN. All parties involved are invested in showcasing the vast pool of talent that Durban has while using the great spaces available in the city in unconventional ways.
Concerts SA is a joint South African/Norwegian live music development project housed under the auspices of SAMRO and managed by IKS Cultural Consulting. Concerts SA receives financial, administrative and technical support from the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, SAMRO and the SAMRO Foundation. Working with musicians, promoters, venue owners and audiences, and providing support to the sector through research and skills development for music professionals, the project aims to build a vibrant and viable live music circuit in southern Africa. It also seeks to develop an interest in and appreciation of live music by showcasing music performances and conducting workshops at schools.
