Commune: a collective introspection is a group show at the KZNSA Gallery of four female artists based in KwaZulu-Natal: Vuyolwethu Ndakisa, Kylie Wentzel, Mandisa Buthelezi and Karla Nixon.
The exhibition is a physical realisation of a virtual exhibition presented at Turbine Art Fair 2020 in collaboration with Strauss & Co, who presented the work of late masters, Gladys Mgudlandlu and Maggie Laubser. The four artists selected respond to the oeuvres of Mgudlandlu and Laubser, speaking to their legacies as female forerunners in their thematics.
Commune shares reflections on personal and collective (public) space – memory and mind space - and the built/natural environment, and explores tensions between ideas of oppression and freedom, reality and escapism. Looking at communal gatherings of women, the exhibition brings to reality the kind of community the KZNSA seeks to foster, and how a shared future is shaped given current restrictions on communing.
KZNSA’s participation in TAF 2020 was made possible by a BASA Grant co-sponsored by Strauss & Co.
Commune runs at the KZNSA Gallery from February 4 to March 7, 2021. The KZNSA Gallery is situated at 166 Bulwer Road, Glenwood, in Durban. More information on 031 277 1705 or cell 082 220 0368 or visit www.kznsa.co.za
