Award-winning ceramic artist from Durban, Sbonelo Luthuli’s exhibition will be showcased at Tatham Art Gallery’s Schreiner Gallery in Pietermaritzburg until June 26 at 17h00.
The exhibition, which is titled Ihubo leNgabadi/Song of the Soil, reveals how the artist looks at the spirituality underpinning life in general and how this has affected his own personal life.
Luthuli’s work arises from religious, political and traditional practices, heritage, customs and aspects of the dynamics of life in general.
Each artwork is modelled with the spiritual powers that he experiences, which allow him to unravel, and navigate a path of creative impulses. These impulses draw their character from love, anger, hate, pain, resolve and happiness.
His vessels are enhanced with texture and detail that can be aligned to the ways his ancestors are recognised through ritualistic incisions and body scarification.
The Tatham Art Gallery is situated opposite the Town Hall in Chief Albert Luthuli Street, Pietermaritzburg. It is open from Tuesdays to Sundays from 10h00 to 17h00. Café Tatham is open on Saturdays. Safe parking with a car guard available.
