The KZN Youth Orchestra is a group of
talented young classical musicians from across KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.
Under the long-standing leadership of Lykele Temmingh, the resident conductor of the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra, and Cathy Peacock, former sub-principal trumpet player of the KZNPO, the young musicians rehearse and perform throughout the school year.
Although the KZNYO has a much longer history, it was formally incorporated as a non-profit organization in 2003.
Over the weekend of July 30 to 31, 2022, the members of the KZN Youth Orchestra performed four concerts as part of its commitment to community service:
Norwegian Settlers Church, Port
Shepstone
In partnership with Genesis Hope South
Africa
Concert and Workshop - Saturday July 30– 11h00
The first 1st concert at the Norwegian
Settlers Church was an informal combination of classical, movie and popular
tunes, mixed with demonstrations of the orchestra’s different instruments to
show how an orchestra works.
The KZNYO performed to over 300 children
from underprivileged backgrounds, plus youth leaders, and families from the wider
church congregation.
The following members of the orchestra
explained how their instruments worked and gave a short solo to demonstrate how
their instruments sound. This was no mean feat, given the scale of the venue
and size of the audience. We were very proud of all of them.
Violin – Ben Burton; Cello – Trygve Nissan;
Double Bass – Sverre Nissan; Flute – Charlize Buckley; Oboe – Vicky Kruse; Clarinet
– Anya Kistner; Saxophone – Jonathan Meyer; Trumpet – Richard Kruse; Trombone –
Kristian Bunyan
The second concert of the day was in the traditional format. The KZNYO played a wide selection of classical, movie and popular tunes to a massive and diverse audience from across the community. This included excerpts from Carmen, Romeo and Juliet, Rocky, The Greatest Showman and Bohemian Rhapsody.
Margate Retirement Village
Concert - Saturday July 30 at 17h30
After packing up all the kit, it was onto
Margate to perform for the residents and community of the Margate Retirement
Village. Again, the KZNYO played a traditional concert for over an hour. From
the first notes of Capriccio, the audience was spellbound, ending with
standing ovations as the audience took to their feet to dance to some older
popular tunes: Tequila and Sway.
Umdoni Retirement Village, Pennington
Concert - Sunday July 31 at 11h00
After overnighting in Scottburgh, the final
concert was in Pennington, to perform for the residents and community of the
Umdoni Retirement Village. Again, the KZNYO received a huge warm welcome and it
was obvious that over lockdown, people have missed the joyous and uplifting
experience of listening to live music performed well.
Say the organisers: “It was an absolute
privilege to be able to perform for these audiences over this past weekend, and
the members of the KZNYO should be commended for their talent, professionalism,
commitment and energy. It was an exhausting weekend, and the KZNYO performed to
their absolute best for each and every performance.
“Well done, KZNYO, on 15.5 hours of Community Service!”
