The Hilton College Theatre is very proud to host soloists from the Royal Ballet in January 2023. Join solo dancers and principal musicians from The Royal Ballet and Royal Opera House for the first time in South Africa in over 60 years in a unique appearance: an unmissable evening of music and dance live on-stage.
South African dancer Ashley Dean is a Soloist of The Royal Ballet. She trained at English National Ballet School and graduated into The Royal Ballet’s Aud Jebsen Young Dancers Programme in 2014, entering the Royal Ballet Company in 2015.
Dean started dancing at the age of five and trained at Cape Junior Ballet Company before joining English National Ballet School in 2011. Awards while a student included bronze medal at the 2011 GenĂ©e International Ballet Competition and the Royal Academy of Dance’s Solo Seal Award in 2013.
Australian dancer Benjamin Ella is a Soloist of The Royal Ballet. He trained at The Royal Ballet Upper School and graduated into the Company in 2009, promoted to First Artist in 2016 and to Soloist in 2017.
Ella was born in Melbourne to former ballet dancers Christine Walsh and Ricardo Ella. After initially training as a tennis player, at the age of 11 he joined his parents’ ballet school, the Australian Conservatoire of Ballet in Richmond. Aged 15, he won the Alicia Markova Bursary to train at The Royal Ballet Upper School and awards as a student included silver prize at the Youth American Grand Prix and joint Outstanding Graduate of the Year at The Royal Ballet School.
English pianist Robert Clark is Head of Music for The Royal Ballet. In addition to managing the Company’s music staff and playing in rehearsals, he regularly gives solo piano performances in Royal Ballet, Royal Opera productions and across Asia and North America.
Clark was born in Kettering and began playing the piano at the age of five. He studied at the Royal College of Music. In 2000, he joined the music staff of The Royal Ballet and was appointed as Head of Music Staff in 2010 and then Head of Music in 2020.
Dan Newell is principal cornet (trumpet) with the orchestra of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, having previously been a member of the London Symphony Orchestra and the London Philharmonic Orchestra. You can hear him playing on over 200 film, TV and video soundtracks including Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Shreks, Love Actually, How to Train Your Dragon, Black Panther, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom and Thor: Love and Thunder. He has also played and recorded with artists including Muse, Elbow, Florence and the Machine, Sam Smith, The 1975, Peter Gabriel, Sir Paul McCartney and is a professor at the Royal College of Music, London.
Performances will take place in the Hilton College Theatre from January 25 to 27, 2023.
