A site-specific performative intervention
featuring the VR experience Container by Dr Meghna Singh and Simon
Wood
The work is part of a series of site-specific performative interventions in the six port cities of South Africa. They encapsulate moments within the history of the city that speak to the import and export of people and things. Juxtaposing the contemporary with the historical, it makes visible the hidden truths that the city hides. In Durban, the site-specific installation reflects on the arrival of the Indians as indentured labourers on the SS Truro in Port Natal on November 16, 1860.
The installation features the virtual reality experience Container, connecting historical and modern slavery to capitalism.
