MILTON ACADEMY JAZZ (USA) FOR CENTRE FOR JAZZ

The Centre for Jazz and Popular Music is proud to welcome back Milton Academy Jazz (USA) on Wednesday March 15, 2023, at 17h30.

Since 1974, Milton Academy’s jazz programme —founded and directed by Bob Sinicrope—has grown to include over 75 students involved in the study and performance of jazz with nine different jazz groups. Downbeat magazine has twice named Milton’s Jazz Combo the best high school jazz group in the country and Milton students have performed for Hugh Masekela, Sipho Mbuse, Desmond Tutu, and President Clinton twice at the White House.

This will be their 13th South Africa Tour since 1992 when Abdullah Ibrahim invited the group to come to South Africa to perform. Milton cherishes its long standing and meaningful relationships with many South African schools and programmes.

In 2007, Bob Sinicrope became the inaugural recipient of the John LaPorta Jazz Educator of the Year award. In 2010, he received both a Downbeat magazine Jazz Education Achievement award and an award from the National Youth Development Council for his service with youth. In 2014, he became the president of the Jazz Education Network. In 2020, he released the first in a series of many online SmartMusic jazz improvisation books entitled Pathways Towards Greatness.

Catch the Milton Academy Jazz on March 15, 2023, at 17h30 at the UKZN, Centre for Jazz and Popular Music.

Doors open at 17h00 with the show starting at 17h30.

Tickets: R100 (R70 pensioners and R40 students)
