(Anne, Nibs van der Spuy’s mother, in her younger years)
Well-known musician Nibs van der Spuy will be holding a family friendly Concert for my mother Anne on May 26 and 27 at the Westville Theatre Club.
He explains the reasons behind the concert:
“My mother Anne was such a huge influence on my life. She was so well-travelled, well-versed in the arts, spoke five languages and was an incredible classical pianist. She was an even bigger influence on my musical journey, and got me excited about the great classical composers and even loved the Beatles.
With raising five children and my father away on long trips as a captain with South African Airways, my mother put the dust cloth on the piano and hardly played in over two decades. It was only in the last few years of her life that she started playing again, and even with arthritic hands, still had amazing dexterity and played with such heartfelt interpretation.
On her last few visits to KwaZulu-Natal, I feel so blessed that we got to play some music together that lifted both our spirits up high. It was beautiful.
Almost to the day, a year after my mother's passing, I will be celebrating her life with two special concerts at the Westville Theatre Club, on May 26 and 27.
My shows will take a different turn where I will perform songs from my past with stories where she was part of the journey. It is going to be special and I am bringing it back home to Westville, where it all began for my precious mom.
Stay blessed and see you there.”
The concert will be performed on May 26 and 27 at the Westville Theatre Club.
Entrance R140 pp. Doors open at 19h00 for the 19h30 show. Bring picnic baskets and wine.
