URBAN PROJECTIONS: ‘DESIGNING FREEDOM’

Urban Projections & Live Performances will highlight Human Rights & Co-Existence

Urban Projections: Designing Freedom is a unique public art experience that will feature projected still and moving images on the windows of the Denis Hurley Centre and the walls of adjacent buildings. The projections are presented by the Denis Hurley Centre, the International Committee of the Red Cross and the Digital Arts programme at the University of KwaZulu-Natal.

The public event is a highlight of the 3rd Artfluence Human Rights Festival presented by the Centre for Creative Arts at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. It will also feature performances by students from the Centre for Jazz & Contemporary Music as well as open mic performances by some of Durban’s spoken word poets. The Denis Hurley Centre’s large-scale scripts projections will focus on the commitment to peace shared by the Hindu, Jewish, Christian and Muslim.

Raymond Perrier, the Director of the Centre. Says: “The Denis Hurley Centre epitomises religious co-operation since it is a place where people of all faiths come together to serve the poor. It is named after the man who as Archbishop of Durban for 45 years brought together all the faith communities of Durban to fight against Apartheid. The projection which will be seen by all driving into the city focuses on the commitment to peace shared by the Hindu, Jewish, Christian and Muslim religions, by showing the word written in the alphabet of the 4 Scriptures.  Peace –Shalom –Salaam –Shanti.”

A digital version of a memorial puzzle produced by the International Committee of the Red Cross which is part of their 'Missing and Deceased Migrant Project' will feature a series of 60 images. Each piece of the puzzle has info on individuals from Zimbabwe who migrated to South Africa and are now missing.

The Digital Arts programme and selected local artists will present animations and digital artworks that explore various human rights themes, with an emphasis on ‘the right to freedom of expression’. The projections will also feature a collaborative drawing event between UKZN, the Urban Sketchers Group, and the University of Antwerp.

Urban Projections: Designing Freedom is curated by Michelle Stewart for the 3rd annual Artfluence Human Rights Festival presented by the Centre for the Creative Arts. It will take place on Sunday May 7 at 18h00 at the Denis Hurley Centre. Admission is free. Food vendors will be trading at the event.
